I can’t figure out tire sizes. I know what each number means, but I just dont get it. I want a 33inch tire on a 16inch rim. Why can’t I just plug that into tirerack or discount tire? Nah we need your sidewall and some non freedom units.
Bullocks I say.

this may help:
https://tiresize.com/calculator/
modern tire sizing is an excellent notation for telling you all about the tire with the least number of numbers, as it were, but it’s true that it tells you nothing about the overall diameter without making calculations . The above calculator can help you cross reference all the dimensions to sizes.
(you probably want something along the lines of a 255/85-R16)

Its primarily because the rolling diameter is a function of both the width AND the height of the sidewall.
You just need to know what rolling diameter you need for your vehicle and how wide you’d like those tyres to be. And then let luck sort it out.
You wait till you try figuring out bicycle tyres in metric!

I usually get tire sizing, but when truck guys start talking tires in terms of inches, my brain is like “does not compute.”
Wheels are English, tires are metric, and that’s the way I likes it, dagnabbit!

I seem to remember this when shopping tires for the bronco. I think if you scroll all the way to the bottom on discount tire or tire discounter it flips to inches.

Yeah, tire sizes suck. The bizarre use of a combination of SI /non-SI units, and the use of aspect ratio instead of just giving the outer diameter. Makes very little sense.

Metric tire sizing almost single handily erases all the benefits the metric system provided to modern medicine.
99% chance it’s 285/75 you’re looking for but I have seen 255/85 (yes they are skinny) work really well on Tacoma’s and land cruisers.

I’m mostly ok with tire sizes, at lea st if I have time to sit down to think about it, but offset/backspacing gets me completely bumfuzzled.

Your Panda had 165 mm wide tires? I had expected less. My 205 had 145 mm narrow tires!
